Without Zoe there would be no Kaleidoscope.
Joy, John and Val had previously sung together in Brighton and were keen to see a Steyning based choir with a wide-ranging repertoire. So between them they got to work and eventually persuaded Zoe to become the Musical Director of a brand new choir.
The first meeting with prospective choir members was held in the Autumn of 2002 in the lovely music room at St Mary’s House Bramber. Wonderful surroundings for a wonderful idea! This idea blossomed and one thing led to another…….
A name had to be found. Several were rejected by the Steering Committee and it was Don our non-singing Treasurer who finally came up with ‘Kaleidoscope’ to reflect our eclectic range of music.
And then we were really up and running.
We sing mainly in Steyning – in St Andrew’s Church and the Steyning Centre, but have also performed in St Mary's House, Hurstpierpoint College Chapel, Petworth House, and at weddings and large parties and events. The Methodist Church has been our ‘home base’ for some time now. Most Thursdays see us note bashing – striving to get it right- doing our very best to satisfy our exacting teacher singing mainly in English but also tackling German, Spanish, Latin and other tongue twisting languages!
We wish to be an integral part of the lively Steyning cultural and creative scene and wherever possible work, and sometimes share the stage with young people and other performers.
We have been fortunate indeed to attract generous sponsorship. This support has enabled us to purchase not only light portable staging but our posh shirts and blouses too. Visitations to the charity shops on the lookout for colourful kit is a thing of the past!
What characterises the choir is the good humoured and supportive
companionship we share. Rehearsals are always fun and we enjoy
each other’s company. NOT that there’s a lot of time to chat –
Zoe is on the case!
She knows we can further raise the bar –
she’s a hard taskmaster but
we wouldn’t change her for the
world.
Her ambition is our ambition – a shared desire to
constantly improve – to sing as well as we are able and to give
our audiences as much listening pleasure as we have in
performing all music we love.
Kaleidoscope Singers are very fortunate to have the support of sponsors Eve Bendall, and Peter Buxton of Mezzo Design Architects - 01903 815355. We're lucky because their generosity has made possible the purchase of staging for our performances - helping us to achieve a better ensemble sound - as well as of our new, colourful shirts – which make us feel like the cat's meow when we perform for our audiences.
Sponsorship has not only helped us acquire these important items - it gives us a psychological boost that spills over into our singing and performances. Naturally, we would welcome another sponsor or two. Who knows what greater musical heights we could attain? If you are interested, please feel free to contact our beloved, non-singing treasurer, Don Rush on 01903 812127.
And finally, we would like to say a very big thank you to Pauline King for so generously giving of her time and expertise in the preparation of images for our website ...... cheers Pauline!
